Dear friends-
I just wanted to pass this interesting news story (link below) on to you in case you hadn’t seen it last week. T. Boone Pickens, the renown energy baron, has been in the news the last few years as he made strides in bringing our dependence on foreign oil to the forefront of media circles. He also has been touting his own energy plan that involves building giant wind farms in Texas and dramatically increasing the use of domestically available natural gas.
The biggest challenge in generating power, especially since most often a power plant needs to be far away as no one wants one in their back yard, is transmission of the power to the city or area that it will be used in. T. Boone’s wind farm plans have been shuttered (he’s stuck with $2Billion in wind mills!) because no one wants to provide the billions of dollars needed to build the high voltage transmission lines from the middle of no where to the city.
As the country debates which energy sources should be part of our future energy plan, solar continues to shine. Solar power is generated right at the point of use so no costly transmission is needed. If these kind of indirect costs were included is the cost debate versus wind, coal, nuclear, etc, solar would only continue to climb to the top of the pack!
The price of solar panels dropped significantly early this year, and will likely continue to decrease very slightly through the rest of 2009. If you have considered solar as an option in the past, there has never been a better time than now. If you are a business or commercial property owner, the government is doing everything they can to help you invest in solar, including huge tax credits and rebates, accelerated depreciation, and even 30% cash grants from the Treasury.
